Why Everyone Needs A Regular Detox
Updated: Jul 5, 2019
Detox has been one of those things that I’ve often thought were unnecessary. I felt that our bodies had enough built-in resources to fight all the toxins that affect it. But I’ve recently changed my mind about it, and now am a big proponent of a regular, even daily detox.
And this is why.. Our bodies and organs as we know it have formed about 200.000 years ago, and haven’t changed much. In that period, people did not have to deal with all the pollution and toxins that we are dealing with right now: air/water pollution, heavy metals, pesticides, chemicals in our cleaners, personal care products, etc. etc. These are all added stressors on our body, they clog our organs, disrupt our hormones, and make us sick, fat, sluggish, allergic, the list goes on and on.
Now, I don’t want to freak you out completely. The truth is that are bodies are amazing and we have built-in systems that can deal with these toxins. Like our liver, that detoxifies chemicals and metabolises drugs. Another important one our lymphatic system, that protects against harmful invaders that are introduced to the body from both externally (food, air, personal care products, water) and internally (damaged proteins and cellular/metabolic waste).
However, the amount that we are getting bombarded with is growing every day, so we have to do as much as possible to help our body defend against them. The more toxins we expel, the healthier our bodies will be.
There are many things you could easily incorporate into your daily routine to detox your body, such as:
Warm water with lemon: helps your liver filter toxins out of your body, and protects it against damage caused by toxins.
Eating clean, organic and predominantly plant-based diet: animal products are often more contaminated with toxins and hormones than the plant-based food. Plants have fibre which helps to get the waste out of your body via the digestive tract.
Herbal teas: dandelion, nettle and milk thistle are great for liver detoxification.
Supergreens: green algae, like chlorella and spirulina bind toxins and expel them via bowel movement.
Dry brushing: helps to move lymphatic system, unclog pores and excrete toxins that become trapped in the skin
Exercise and sauna: sweating releases many toxins, plus it helps move your lymphatic system.
