4 Benefits of a Plant-Based (Vegan) Diet For Your Body & Mind

I’ve been on a Whole Food Plant-Based (Vegan) diet for about 10 years now.

It all started during my trip to Los Angeles, ten years ago. While I was there, I discovered amazing healthy vegan restaurants and decided that for two weeks I would only eat at these places and my diet did not contain any animal products (meat, dairy, eggs, cheese).

During these two weeks, I felt so incredibly good! I felt a lightness and ease in my body that I had not felt for a really long time. It seemed like everything was working so much better: my sluggishness was gone, my digestion was better than ever and my energy levels went through the roof. I thought this all had to do with me being in Sunny California, so when I got back home I went back to my regular diet, that included occasional animal products.

Within a few weeks, I started feeling more tired and sluggish. I wanted to test to see if this had to do with the diet, so I went back to a plant-based diet for a couple of weeks. And sure enough, almost instantly I started feeling great again! Ten years later, I’m still thriving being fuelled by plants, and not planning on going back to eating animal-products.

There are many scientifically proven benefits of a plant-based diet, but in this article I only want to list the benefits that I’ve personally noticed when it comes to my body and mind. Here are a few of them:

More Energy: I have so much more energy than I had before. One of the reasons is that digestion of meats and other animal foods takes much more energy than the digestion of plant-based foods. When you take away animal-based foods, there so much energy left for your body to function

Better Digestive Health: I have better digestion and (TMI-alert) a more regular elimination. This probably has to do with the fact that plant-based food contains more fibre. Fibre is the main food source for the beneficial gut bacteria, and more of this good gut bacteria means less bad ones, so less bloating, indigestion, constipation, etc.

Less Anxiety and Stress: I used to feel much more anxious and experience more periods of stress than I do now. It is shown that all of these things get triggered by inflammation in the brain. What we know is that inflammation in the body could get repaired by antioxidants and phytochemicals (chemicals produced by plants) and plant-foods are high in both.

Anti Ageing: I'm in my 40's and look better than I did when I was in my 20', and I know this has everything to do with my diet. Plus my hair is thicker than ever and grows very fast. Inflammation is one of the main causes of skin ageing, and as I mentioned before antioxidants and phytochemicals help fight the inflammation.

One thing that I wanted to mention is that I’m predominantly eating a Whole Food Plant-Based diet, meaning that 80-90% of the time I choose healthy, whole food rather than processed / junk food. Vegan or not, highly processed and junk food is not contributing to health and is best to be enjoyed occasionally.
